This trail, which puts you in touch with 1300 years of history and culture, is the route used for the harsh ascetic practice known as the sennichi kaihogyo. Walk through groves of Japanese cedar, where the sound of chanted sutras drifts gently through the air, past the Myoo-do Hall and around the East and West pagodas.

Ganzan Daishi Road is the road from Ogi, with its beautiful terraced fields, to Yokawa. Yokawa was where figures including Ennin (Jikaku), Ganzan Daishi (Ryogen), Nichiren, and Dogen conducted their training.

The Hira Mountains extend from the west bank of Lake Biwa. From the mountain ridge, you can see Mt. Haku and Mt. Ontake far away to the north, and the Suzuka Mountains past Mt. Ibuki to the east. Stop by the legendary Kojorogaike pond.

Moving from the Arakawa Pass to Mt. Karato, the beech forests are beautiful. Visiting in May, when the rhododendrons blossom, is particularly recommended.

Climb from the Lake Biwa side. Enjoying the beech forests, walk along the open ridge to the summit (1214m). A huge panorama spreads out before you. To Yakumogahara, looking at the Hakusan mountain range and Mt. Ontake in the distance. Enjoy the grasses and flowers of each season.

Katsuragawa Myoo-in was the head of a group of temples known as the Hira Sanzenbo, and even today ascetic practice is conducted in the three waterfalls at the back of the temple. From Mt. Goten, enjoy a pleasant walk along the ridgeline while looking out on the southwest ridge and Mt. Bunagatake.

From the terraced rice fields, chosen as one of Japan’s 100 best, climb up Mt. Jadanigamine, the northernmost part of the Hira Mountain range. The view from around the summit is unobstructed, and you can see right across the northern section of Lake Biwa. Wash away the sweat at Kuchiki hot spring sky.
